Caldwell cigars is an intriguing boutique cigar maker that, like all modern business ventures, can trace its roots to a particular moment in time. For Robert Caldwell, that moment happened in a restaurant. As a cigar fan, he asked to end the meal with a smoke. But, when he saw the sad state of the restaurant’s humidor, he knew there was a huge opportunity to do better. Normally, when confronted by a situation like that, the reaction most of us share is to say, “Wouldn’t it be cool if someone did something about this?”
Caldwell is that someone.
After a few years stocking the humidors of restaurants and hotels, he had been drawn deep enough into the cigar industry to start dreaming of his own blends and brands. Eventually, Caldwell cigars was launched in 2014, but as the home page of the company will tell you, it’s not a brand – it’s a movement – focused on synergy within the industry. Perhaps that means interesting collaborations and partnerships?
Whatever Caldwell was getting at, we can confirm that this tall Miami dude has worked hard to elevate his blends, not his brand. The cigars are tending to gain more fame than Caldwell as a blender or Caldwell Cigars company. Eastern Standard, the 93-rated The King is Dead stick… slowly but surely, if he keeps creating high quality cigars, Caldwell will become a big brand whether he likes it or not.
As he’s explained, “The purpose of Caldwell Cigars is to go wherever we must to find the most exotic flavors we can.” He “became tired of having to focus on the name of a product, when the focus should be on the product itself.” Sounds pretty good to us!
