We wish we could tell you exactly what a Presidente cigar is. The only thing cigar companies seem to agree on is that its size is big – one of the biggest vitolas in the world. While some Presidentes are a mere 7.5 inches long, others are 9 or more inches of ruler-dominating length. They’re clearly meant to be the biggest stogie in your humidor, and a cigar that you bust out when you want tons of smoking time and tons of head-turning power. The ring gauge varies a bit less, mostly clustering at 47 and the low to mid-50s.
Then there’s the shape.
Some companies roll up a “Presidente” cigar that is a traditional parejo like any other cigar you’re used to smoking. It’s got straight sides and a rounded dome on the head, plus an open foot – nothing too crazy there, aside from the length. Other companies roll up Presidentes that are figurados. They have a super narrow taper on the head like a perfecto, and a nipple-like foot for easy lighting. It really depends on the manufacturer. There’s nothing standardized about it, so if you’re looking for something particular, don’t just make a purchase because it says “Presidente” on the label. Keep an eye on the length, ring gauge, and picture of the cigar. The only thing that you can rely on is that companies usually make a Presidente big in size, no matter where in the world they’re rolling it.
Some of our favorite examples come from top brands and premium manufacturers. There’s the Ashton VSG Spellbound, Padrón Thousand Series Magnum, Baccarat Original King, full flavor Arturo Fuente OpusX Perfecxion A, and tons more. If you want the funky shape, go for a Partagas Presidente cigar. And if you’re looking for pure size, maybe hit up the Ashton Cabinet Series No. 1 Presidente. It’s nine inches long with a ring gauge of 52 and should take you the better part of a day to smoke if you’re taking your time.
It should be clear by now that Presidente Cigars are not, in any sense, a casual smoke. When you’re about to sit down and take root into a chair, this is the cigar to light up. You’re not going anywhere for a long time, and this is the full-size cigar to let everyone know you’re not to be bothered. On the other hand, a Presidente could go with you everywhere if you want a cigar that can keep up the smoke for a full morning or afternoon’s projects.
It’s all up to you, of course. You’re in charge, Mr. Presidente.
