The Caldwell Lost and Found Holy Braille cigar was missing in action since 2008, but the Caldwell Crew finally located it for our smoking pleasure. The stogie is part of an extensive series of special blends that all generally fall under the idea of “lost and found.” That is, tobaccos that were sniffed out by Robert Caldwell as he scours the aging rooms and storage vaults of various companies throughout the west’s tobacco-growing regions, looking for leaf and stogies that have been overlooked or put on hold, but that is worthy of being sent to market by the right team.
That’s what Lost and Found are all about.
Holy Braille, in particular, is one you can read with your fingertips. The first edition (will there be others? Who knows!?) featured a venerable 2008 Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, along with some select Dominican long-filler. Run your hands over it, and you’ll be able to tell the story of a leaf that is a long way from its starting point. it’s hard enough to properly store cigars for the few months or years prior to smoking them in our own humidors. Can you imagine ensuring that a cigar is protected for 14 years or more? One screw-up can really throw things off, so if you find something that smokes well after all those years, it’s a rare treasure.
There were 999 made of this Caldwell Lost and Found Holy Braille blend, one shy of the even thousand. The blend was masterminded by Francisco “Chico” Rivas, the blender behind Quesada cigars like the 91-rated Selección España. With over three decades of experience in the industry, the man knows how to put together a special mature flavor profile using extensively aged tobacco like this, so we’ve got high hopes for how these stogies will smoke when lighter meets leaf.
The inspiration for the Caldwell Lost and Found Holy Braille cigar is actually the Jay Z / J. Timberlake song “Holy Grail,” which talks about a hot and cold love affair. Draw in for heat, blow out cold smoke. We can dig it.
This one has LOTS of flavors, which can be surprising in its boldness for a cigar using long-aged tobacco. The aging process tends to soften harsh notes and lead to a more mature profile. The Holy Braille smokes up like pepper on the grill, with hints of char but also vegetal sweetness. It’s quite enjoyable in its own way but isn’t a super classic type of cigar. This is a special smoke that not everyone will love, but that some will really get into. Smoke it with a barbeque and a beer and it’ll probably be a very good time.
