Man, it’s almost impossible to keep up with Robert Caldwell and Co. as they ship out one cool-ass blend after the other. But this is one of the mainstays. If you’ve been into Caldwell cigars for a while, you’ve probably heard of it. The deal with Lost and Found Yellow Cake is that they “lost” the tobacco when they chopped it off the leaf they were rolling other blends with, and “found” it when they cleaned up after the rolling session.
That’s right, Yellow Cake cigars are made with remnants or “chop.”
But don’t be spooked. This is really primo chop that comes from tobacco used on the Long Live the King, Eastern Standard, and King is Dead blends. You see, as rollers create the beautiful masterpieces that your humidor is packed with, they have to trim some tobacco here and there. These trimmings are high-quality leaf, but they had to go to preserve the shape and clean construction that luxury hand mades are known for. Rather than waste it, Caldwell blends it up into a stogie they call Yellow Cake.
The origin of these sticks reminds us of making a mess with cake crumbles, and maybe that’s the inspiration for the name?
For years, this was an event-only blend. When you got a box of Caldwell cigars in person, you got a 3 pack of Yellow Cake cigars along with it. And they were pretty darn good! Good enough that the company eventually said, “You know what? Why don’t we just produce these as a regular line?”
And so they did.
Caldwell Lost and Found Yellow Cake cigars have specifically included the Dominican Corojo wrapper from Long Live the King along with the Corojo Ligero Dominican long-fillers from Eastern Standard and the King is Dead.
Pepper, earthiness, honey, and graham cracker are all a part of the smoking experience. But the cigar is offered in a few different versions, so this changes a bit from blend to blend. You can get it with a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper and also a Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper, as well as in box-pressed and regular versions. The Maduro version is more earthy and sweet than the more traditional pepper-forward Habano.
There’s no frosting, but we invite you to pair these cigars with a nice bourbon (or red wine) to complete your dessert table.
