Cigars are often about respite and relaxation. You head into cigar time looking to kick back and let all your cares melt away along with billowing clouds of smoke. You head to your humidor and pull out a Rocky Patel Super Ligero thinking, “Hey, this one sounds potent, but that’s what I’m in the mood for!” You find your desired smoking location, pour a drink of some kind, maybe put on a little music, and then settle in for a session. You pull off the band, clip or punch the cap to your liking, find a lighter, and start roasting.
You take those first few draws to get things going…
Ahh yes.
But then it hits you. You realize this is no Connecticut Shade blondie. You check the label again and see that this is the Super Ligero. You Google “ligero” and find that it’s the most potent priming of leaf off the tobacco plant; the one responsible for a cigar’s spice and strength. You learn that ligero provides a cigar’s nicotine kick. And as the spiciness and strength grab you by the face, you realize you just hopped onto the back of someone’s Harley-Davidson FXDR. The engine is purring, roaring, and rattling. You’re about to take to the open road. Oh shit! Here we goooooooo!
Yeah, it’s kind of like that.
This one ain’t for newbies. This will be one of the spicier, stronger cigars you ever light up.
The wrapper is a Cuban-seed Honduran San Augustín leaf. The powerhouse inside is a proprietary Costa Rican ligero, which is blended with some fine Nicaraguan tobaccos. The flavors aren’t totally one-dimensional, despite the primacy of the spice. The medium to full bodied smoke features notes of oak, black cherry, and of course, crushed red and black pepper.
And after all that, this one actually got a 90 rating from Cigar Aficionado! It has the audacity to be a decent smoke while also being a total ass-kicker. Rocky, you madman, you.
