Many people now appreciate a cigar aesthetic called “rustic chic,” which was pioneered in part in the modern era by Rocky Patel. Part of what makes the Edge cigars rustic is using natural wrappers with a rough look, instead of focusing on perfect smoothness and a wrapper that looks like it came out of a machine. You can also see some of this approach found in Tatuaje and other cigars. Of course, Patel didn’t invent this approach – it’s basic enough and any humble home-rolled smoke made over the last 300 years probably qualified – but he did help bring it to the mass market.
Rocky Patel Edge cigars were initially unbanded, and sold in a simple wooden box. This presentation was copied often enough that Patel eventually had to commission a band for the cigars so smokers wouldn’t get confused by other companies’ products (or so he says). They come in a variety of wrappers and styles, so we’ll take each one in turn.
Rocky Patel Edge Sumatra
This is a more classic smoke featuring a Honduran binder and Nicaraguan filler blend. Cigar Aficionado gave it a 91 and named it the #24 cigar of 2007. Aged wood with a pinch of ground pepper is the dominant flavor profile.
