The Rocky Patel Disciple cigar is the dark twin to the Rocky Patel White Label – the two were released together and are meant to contrast each other.
Rocky is no stranger to dark cigars – the spicy, chocolatey Mexican wrapper of the 91-point A.L.R., the leathery leaf of the Vintage 1990, the reliably earthy Costa Rican Maduro on the Olde World Reserve – these are all excellent examples of what the Rocky Patel blending team can do with mature tobacco.
We should caution you, though. Mexican San Andrés wrappers like these never lose their peppery kick all the way it seems. No matter how much fermentation they undergo, you always get a spicy note to wake you up and give you a little “Buenos Dias!” from our neighbor to the south. This is then matched with the other earthy and sweet notes that come from the Maduro cover leaf of the Rocky Patel Disciple cigar.
Inside, you’ll find high-quality Nicaraguan tobacco to round out the blend. This adds richness and flavor to the smoke in a way that pretty much every company is trying to emulate these days. Nicaraguan tobacco is an absolute winner – there’s no doubt about that – and so the Disciple cigar is using a reliable long-filler to build with.
The flavor of the smoke when all leaves are blended together is earthy, woody, and of course, peppery. It’s a tasty puff if you’re someone who likes cigars with a little personality. We’re not sure if Rocky was meaning to conjure up images of Jesus and his disciples with this cigar, but it’s probably inevitable. That said, you don’t have to be the least bit religious to enjoy this stogie.
The twin to the Rocky Patel Disciple cigar is called the “White Label,” and it features a smooth Connecticut shade wrapper for people in search of a milder smoke. It doesn’t turn things all the way down, however. There’s a Honduran binder leaf in there for a very nice layer of complexity.
Check out the sizes before you buy, too. There’s one called the Bala that’s kind of interesting. It’s a perfecto-type shape in the sense that it tapers along its length. It’s 5.75 x 58, and the foot is supposed to be closed and pre-punched. If you’re in the mood for a cigar that’s made a bit differently, grab the Bala cigar for some smoke experimentation.
It’s another delicious slice of darkness from Rocky P.
