Montecristo Monte by AJ Fernandez
Montecristo is one of the most storied cigar companies in the world. With nearly a hundred years of history, this organization has forgotten more about cigars than most companies will ever learn. But even with all those years gone by, Montecristo is still breaking new ground with blends like the Monte by AJ Fernandez.
AJ is one of the hottest blending partners around. When you want to go to Nicaraguan, he’s on the shortlist of guys you want to collaborate with. Montecristo knows their stuff, but they’re specialists in Dominican tobacco. That’s their home, after all. Years after the split into two companies (one Dominican, one Cuban), Montecristo has firmly established itself as a DR fixture.
So they needed a hand with this one.
Monte by AJ Fernandez is a box-pressed mix of a number of high-quality tobaccos. The filler blend is a handshake between Dominican Piloto Cubano and Nicaraguan criollo 98 leaf. Then comes AJ’s well-chosen Nicaraguan Corojo 98 binder. And over that, he’s placed an Ecuador Habano 2000 wrapper.
The flavors are an interesting combination of each nation’s typical profile. There’s the DR leather, the Nicaraguan pepper, and wood… it’s really a treat. Cigar Aficionado described it this way: “Notes of black pepper and leather support the nutty, walnut base before the woody, tea-like finish.” So there are even some delicate aromas in there, too. We’d expect nothing less from an artisan like AJ Fernandez.
To clear up some confusion, this is a follow-up blend to Monte by Montecristo, which was the 93-point #9 cigar of 2014. Montecristo tapped AJ to put his own spin on the line to take it to a new place, and so he has. The two would make fairly interesting comparison smokes, actually, if you can get your hands on them.
