For a brand with such deep Cuban and Dominican roots, you might be surprised to hear that the Montecristo White Vintage cigar blend is really something of a love letter to Connecticut. In fact, a lot of core Montecristo cigars make use of genuine Connecticut wrappers, but this one is special. There’s a 2008 Connecticut shade wrapper on this stogie that makes it a special treat for fans of that classic CT flavor profile.
But wait, there’s more!
Montecristo White Vintage cigars are a follow-up to the earlier White series. This version takes a much-loved blend and adds in a wildcard leaf in the form of Peruvian long-filler tobacco. This is joining the Dominican and Nicaraguan leaves that form the backbone of the blend. A Nicaraguan binder then completes the picture.
Speaking of pictures, the box art really sets the mood. It features the Gershel Farm in Somers, Connecticut where the wrapper leaf is grown. A product like tobacco calls to mind heat-drenched fields where the sun is brighter than a man can stand without a hat. But this type of field is different. This is a stateside location, and farther north than many tobacco farmers would dare to plant. The fact remains, however, that genuine Connecticut shade tobacco is a flavor unlike any other.
Standing next to a 12-foot tobacco stalk in Somers, there’s no denying that the ground there was meant for our favorite leaf.
The flavors are fairly mild, but still engaging. You’ll taste white pepper, buttered popcorn, and latte in the smoke of the Montecristo White Vintage cigar. As you puff along, you’ll no doubt taste the subtle notes that made this one worthy of expanding the White series name. It’s a humble cigar, scoring 85 points with Cigar Aficionado. It’s not bold at all. Instead, it’s like a relaxing rock in the chair at the end of a hard work day out in the fields.
