Drew Estate La Vieja Habana Brazilian Maduro cigars are an example of “waste not, want not.”
You see, when torcedores (cigar rollers) are making premium smokes, they have a crescent-shaped blade by their side called a chaveta. It almost looks like something you might see in a bakery. As they lay out the leaf and figure out how it’s all going to come together in the roll, they often have to trim some good tobacco off to make a perfectly beautiful stogie. But when you’ve got really nice leaf, it would be a shame to simply toss the trimmings in the trash.
Drew Estate, like many cigar companies, knows better than that.
As a result, we get delicious blends like the Drew Estate La Vieja Habana Brazilian Maduro cigar, which makes good use of the chopped leaf as short-filler. The cut leaf used in this particular stogie is Nicaraguan tobacco from the Estelí and Jalapa growing regions. The wrapper can’t be made from trimmings, so Drew Estate simply brings in one of their outstanding Brazilian mata fina Maduro wrappers. This earthy, dark leaf brings character to the blend without being overpowering.
The flavors of Drew Estate La Vieja Habana Brazilian Maduro cigar include subtle chocolate, leather, roasted coffee bean, and hints of lightly sweet plum. It’s a profile you might recognize from other mata fina blends from Drew Estate, although the charred meat of the Liga series is not here. This is a more dessert-style smoke, instead of a banquet feast.
La Vieja Habana was the first Drew Estate cigar when the company was barely a twinkle in Jonathan Drew’s eye. Back then, he and his partner Marvin Samel were simply trying to find a way to keep their original WTC cigar kiosk stocked. We’d love to get in a time machine to go back and tell JD what his company would become (and save the Towers, while we’re at it). We’d also love to bring a La Vieja Habana Maduro cigar for him to enjoy, too.
