The Oliva Serie V Melanio was awarded Cigar of the Year in 2014 with a stunning 96 rating!
The original Oliva Serie V blend featured aged Nicaraguan long-fillers from a number of locations (Condega, Esteli, and Jalapa), and it was quite good. In fact, it scored highly on many lists, year after year. The Melanio changed things up, however, swapping the Nicaraguan Habano wrapper for an Ecuadorian Sumatra leaf, and the company instantly made history.
The result is a full-bodied cigar that combines the greatness of Oliva's Nicaraguan puros with the rich flavors of a dark, oily Sumatra wrapper. There’s plenty of strength, along with pepper and spice, which is perfectly complimented by the leather and creamy coffee notes from the Sumatra wrapper. It's a classic cigar that honors the family's long tradition of growing some of the best tobacco in the world and producing blends that have showed the world what makes Nicaraguan tobacco so special.
The Olivas had long worked with Nicaraguan tobaccos, and eventually struck upon an excellent blend in their signature Serie V, first offered in 2006. The “Melanio” was created to honor Melanio Oliva, who started the family tradition of growing tobacco many generations ago in Cuba. Like so many growers and cigar makers, the revolution sent him elsewhere. In this case, Nicaragua. Decades and decades later, the move clearly was the right one. Thanks to this exquisite smoke, the Olivas are poised to stay at the very top of the cigar world for a long time to come.
