Corona cigars are not a chart-topping cigar size, but they remain desirable to a certain segment of aficionados. Typically they measure around 5.25 inches long, with a ring gauge of about 42. There is, of course, some variation in these measurements. The cigar industry is not a place where exact shape and size standards are adhered to. If a company wants to make a 5.5-inch-long corona cigar, they will. And if they want to beef it up to a ring gauge of 44, they’ll do that too.
If you’re particular about your cigar dimensions, check the measurements before you buy!
Corona cigars are parejos, which means that they generally have straight sides, a rounded head, and a flat foot. This distinguishes them from figurados, which may be fatter in certain parts than others, and which may have tapered ends or feature interesting end shapes (Presidente cigars have something that looks like a nipple at the end). This means that corona cigars look fairly standard, and there’s no fancy trick to lighting or smoking them.

The corona cigar is a fairly compact format. While fat ring gauge cigars leave a lot of room for multifaceted filler blends with tons of tobacco leaves, corona blenders have to be a bit more focused in their leaf selection. This doesn’t mean that you won’t get complexity in corona cigars, but that the general tendency will be for a more straightforward flavor profile and concentrated draws.
Now, as we said, corona cigars don’t currently lead the way when it comes to sales. Retailers across the industry report that toros / corona gordas (measuring 6 x 50) are about 50% of sales. After that, the 5 x 50 Robusto is about 25% of sales. In third place is the 6 x 60 grande. If you look at these sizes, you’ll notice that corona cigars simply are narrower than the 50-ring gauge cigars that dominate today’s cigar market.
Despite their niche status, however, corona cigars are still made by a huge variety of cigar companies. In 2020, Cigar Aficionado named the Rocky Patel No. 6 Corona the #9 cigar of the year, with an outstanding 95-point rating. Other high-ranking cigars tend to be double coronas, which are much longer and a bit thicker at 7.5 x 50. There are also petit coronas to complete the corona family, and these compact little smokables are around 4.5 x 42.
You can find a number of corona cigars in popular blend lines, like the Arturo Fuente OpusX, Padrón 1964 Anniversary, Drew Estate Liga Privada No. 9, Henry Clay War Hawk, La Aroma de Cuba Edicion Especial No. 1, and lots more. Even when a cigar is not a best-seller, companies will still sometimes cater to those who love it and roll them up in an effort to make a blend line more complete. This means that corona cigars will probably always be here, so if you’re a fan, you can enjoy them for years to come.
