You know, the RoMa Craft cigar brand is special. In an industry full of overhyped products (are we guilty of that here in our shop? Why I never!), the RoMa Craft Tobac team turns things on their head by looking at things in a traditional way. While plenty of companies seem to start sometimes with branding, marketing, and price and then worry about the cigar as a second step, these guys are starting with the cigar.
Or at least, that’s what they say.
RoMa Craft cigars are headed up by Michael Rosales (of Costa Rican Imports) and Skip Martin (of Galveston Bay Tobacco).
Rosales and Martin. Ro and Ma. RoMa Craft.
In 2011, Rosales and Martin worked together to build Fabrica de Tobacco NicaSueno, a cigar manufacturing facility in Estelí, Nicaragua. Their first blend, the RoMa Craft CroMagnon cigar took off right away and helped them get a strong start in the industry by delivering tremendous value for the price. Since 2012, they’ve been known not just for focusing on high-quality leaf and artful blends but also using rarer tobacco than other more mainstream blends. For their best cigar examples, check out 1) the Indonesian Bezuki binder of the Intemperance or 2) the Honduran Pueblo Nuevo high priming leaf that helped the CroMagnon blend score a 93-point rating from Cigar Aficionado as the #15 cigar of the year.
As Rosales says, “The cigar community, as a whole, is the only place where you really break down the barriers for economic status. It does not matter if you are smoking a $50.00 Davidoff or an $8.00 Roma Craft; as soon as you walk into the humidor it is bound to open up a conversation… ‘What are you smoking?’”
