My Father The Judge was the number 7 cigar of 2017, according to Cigar Aficionado, and earned a 93 rating from the panel of experts. The Judge features an Ecuadoran Sumatra-seed wrapper, two Nicaraguan binders (corojo and criollo) and filler from three Garcia plantations in Nicaragua: La Bonita Two, El Pedrero, and San Rafael. The resulting flavors are a big time treat, and they include chocolate, red pepper, nuts, and gingersnap.
The cigars themselves are nothing to play with. Box-pressed in thick ring gauges, these burn long and strong, not unlike fine litigation. On that point, the name for the cigar comes from a Garcia family friend who is a judge.
The Judge is more full-bodied than the original My Father line, of which this is an extension. It offers a nice departure from the core blends and wrappers that have made My Father cigars so famous. It proves yet again that Don Pepin, the company founder, is absolutely not a one-trick pony. He knows how to find his way to a premium blend no matter what tobaccos he’s using. Over his decades of service to leading Cuban cigar companies, he acquired a master’s taste for tobacco and now we can all enjoy the fruits of his labor.
Is it worthy of the hype? You be the judge.
