There was a time before Don Pepin was a household name in the cigar world. Before he made his mark, he had to be introduced as “José Garcia” first. Now, everyone knows the name Don Pepin – he’s a living legend to aficionados everywhere, thanks to the way he burst onto the scene with the #4-ranked Tatuaje Cabinet Tainos in 2005, then managed the astounding feat of double Cigar of the Year award wins in 2012 (for the La Flor de las Antillas cigar) and 2015 (for My Father Le Bijou 1922).
This blend goes back to the time before all that.
The Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ is part of the larger Don Pepin Garcia brand, which were some of Don Pepin’s earliest offerings under his own name, instead of on behalf of other companies. Other blends “under that leaf” include the Don Pepin Garcia Original (or Blue label) and Cuban Classic.
But enough about history. What are we smoking, here?
Well, there’s a spicy Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper on the outside of this cigar, holding in a delicious Nicaraguan Corojo binder and Nicaraguan Criollo fillers. It’s a Nicaraguan puro, obviously, from a man who knows about as much as anyone about blending tobaccos from that region. The taste is nice and spicy, with notes of earth and leather – just what you’re expect from Don Pepin in his early days.
