The inspiration for a cigar line can come from anywhere. For the Tatuaje Black cigar, it was a smoke from the countryside that Tatuaje founder Pete Johnson simply couldn’t stop thinking about.
As the story goes, he was on an island famous for its “historic cigar making.” (There are very few places that could be - the most obvious guess is Cuba. Let’s go with that.) Anyway, Johnson was kicking back in a small town and trying to disconnect and relax a bit. As he sat in the morning sun, a local gentleman rode up on his bicycle and passed Mr. Johnson a handmade cigar – one from the rider’s own stash. The cigar wasn’t a model of flawless construction, but the flavors were hearty, down to earth, and just right for the setting.
Johnson couldn’t shake the idea that this was a smoke he’d like to meet again, so he got to work with his blenders. Eventually, he had a private smoke that he enjoyed and that had a similar flavor profile to that one handmade smoke he lit up that fine morning on the island. Occasionally, he’d give some out here and there. As time passed, he realized he was hiding a winner, and finally did a production run to share with the world. Tatuaje Black Label limited edition cigars, as well as the containers they came in, were highly sought after. Sometimes, prices would get crazy. Fortunately, however, after seeing how much fans enjoyed the new cigar, Johnson decided to make it a regular thing.
The current incarnation of the Tatuaje Black cigar features a Nicaraguan Sun-Grown Criollo wrapper and the classic Tatuaje Nicaraguan filler blend. Flavors of coffee and earth, as well as sweet nougat, abound. It’s a super tasty smoke and its obvious why the flavor simply couldn’t be left behind on “that island.”
