“Your brunettes are gorgeous, but have you got any blondes?” Why yes, we do!
Epic rode out into the market with two blends initially. A classic Corojo was sporting the leaf that made Cuban cigars so famous. And there was also an earthy Maduro. But, as Epic founder Dean Parsons says, that wasn’t enough. The company wasn’t going to stop there. But what would come next?
One retailer was insistent: “You need a Connecticut. That’s what customers are asking for. And can you make a short Gordo?”
Connecticut cigars are known for their blonde wrapper shade. In Spanish, a blonde can be called “la rubia.” And so a blend was born. It didn’t happen quickly. It took a year to create Epic La Rubia cigars!
See, some cigars take a lot of time to come together. It might sound surprising, but each grower isn’t like a Willy Wonka of tobacco, with every leaf under the sun available for a blender’s discriminating palate to sample. Instead, harvests come in, are cured, fermented, and aged, and then are sampled. And many blenders must work with what they get and what they’ve tasted elsewhere. Heck, they may have to combine leaf from 5 different farms in three countries to get it all to come together the way they want.
So a year of work brought blondie into the fold.
Before the cover leaf gets involved, Epic La Rubia cigars are built around a core of Dominican and Nicaraguan long-fillers. It’s a pretty standard combination for Epic (and for anyone, really). The flavors are tried and tested. The binder is a total surprise, though. Mexican San Andrés tobacco. Fans of this leaf know it as the spicy, earthy wrapper that graced the Ernesto Perez-Carillo La Historia, My Father La Opulencia, and several other highly-rated blends. But in a Connecticut?
Well, the name on the band says “Epic,” doesn’t it? Why wouldn’t these guys go for something a bit different?
Outside that bundle, there’s an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. It’s mild and delicious, giving the whole stick its profile. There are creamy peanuts, hay, coffee, vanilla bean, and many more. While the strength is mild, there are plenty of flavors to keep this stogie from becoming dull. On the contrary, Epic La Rubia is one of the more exciting Connecticut's.
Blondes are still having more fun, it seems. And we’re happy to join them. The brunettes in the humidor will have to make a little room…
