The Cohiba Nicaragua cigar is one of the best offerings from General Cigar Company, the Dominican Republic-based maker of the Cohibas available for sale in America. (If you came here in search of Cubans, we offer our sincerest apologies. The government won’t let us import or sell them. It’s kind of a long story. The good news, of course, is that you found a cigar that earned a respectable 91 rating from Cigar Aficionado, and that is a highly enjoyable smoke!)
So, with that out of the way, let’s chat about this glorious tobacco stick.
Outside, the Cohiba Nicaragua cigar uses a Honduran Sun Grown Colorado Oscuro wrapper, and this is what really makes the difference, here. Tobacco leaves from higher primings (that is, higher up the tobacco stalk) that drink in full sunlight are often used for filler. It takes special effort, however, to make them workable as a wrapper leaf. Fortunately, Cohiba knows their stuff and has managed to produce an interesting cigar. Inside, you then get a blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos. The binder is harvested from a farm in Jalapa, and the fillers come from growers in Jalapa and Estelí.
Once you light up, as with every other cigar, you’ll find out why the cigar earned a decent rating. The early white pepper and cumin notes give way to a core of strong coffee, and then departs with a sweet fruity finish. This medium to full-body smoke is a great example of why Nicaraguan blends have enjoyed such popularity. It’s flavorful leaf that lends itself to a variety of blending styles, and Cohiba has made great use of it here.
