When you think of a classic Connecticut cigar, you probably think of a nice mild, smooth cigar with creamy coffee flavors – the quintessential morning smoke. These are the cigars that accompany us after we wake up, when we drive in to work, or when we’re just contemplating the sunrise. They’re also kind of a go to for newer smokers or that we hand to wives and girlfriends when we’re trying to get them into cigars.
This one’s a little different than that.
The Cohiba Connecticut has a lot of the flavors you’d expect, but the difference here is that there’s a lot of them. This is a complex smoke, with the taste of white pepper, cream, toast, nuts, honey, fresh baked bread, and lots more. It’s the kind of cigar that you pull on, blow out some smoke, and then smack your lips for a bit, just pondering what’s going on in your mouth. Then you take another pull, and then another… before you know it, you’re halfway in and still trying to figure out what the cigar tastes like.
It’s got an Ecuador Connecticut wrapper from Los Rios – not exactly shade-grown but in cloudy Ecuador, you don’t need the cheesecloth to get the reduced sun effect needed for a quality Connecticut leaf. Inside, there’s a flavorful Mexican San Andrés binder, along with a filler blend that features a wild mixture of Brazilian Mata Fina, Dominican Olor and Piloto Cubana, and Nicaraguan Jalapa tobaccos. This is a Connecticut that will take some work to keep up with, but that is really rewarding for fans of milder smokes who don’t like to be bored by the blend.
For those unfamiliar with the story, there are two Cohiba companies out there – one in Cuba, one in the Dominican Republic. In the U.S., we sell the Dominican product, as the federal embargo on Cuban cigars prevents us from offering those smokes without getting an unwelcome visit from the FBI, ATF, or whoever is tasked with bringing in retailers that forget their 1960s Cold War history. We like having a legitimate company, so we’re behaving ourselves until the Habano Wall is torn down.
