The CroMagnon Mastodon cigar is a limited-edition box-pressed take on the 4 1/2 x 60 Mandible. And of course, it delivers so much of the flavor that the blend is famous for.

For those keeping score, this is actually an Aquitaine. Instead of the original Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, Aquitaine blends feature an Ecuadorian habano ligero wrapper. It’s a high priming ligero and a very thick leaf. Once you get it in your hands, you’ll see that it’s a proper caveman: oily and toothy, and not particularly civilized.

Beneath that, there’s a totally exotic Cameroon binder that brings in notes of fragrant wood and herbs. This holds in Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos from Estelí, Condega, and Pueblo Nuevo.

The cigar itself is well made. It’s beautifully round, really, and just one of those irresistible cigars. As soon as you get it in your hands, you’ll start sniffing it deeply, savoring the cold aromas. You can tell you’re in for something special.

Light it up, and taste cocoa and licorice for a mix of earthy and fragrant flavors. Enjoy the red pepper kick when it arrives. And indulge in the sweet and creamy dessert notes that one reviewer said were like banana cream pie!

The size and shape might surprise you – the Mandible was short but fat at 4 ½ x 60. Now, the Mastodon presses that into a more rectangular shape for those who prefer a box-pressed cigar. Take care lighting it and make sure you get the entire foot going at once to avoid canoeing.
