Two years after Castro’s communists seized control of Cuba in 1959, they nationalized several cigar farms. Among these was the Padrón farm. Shortly after, José Padrón would leave the country. As it turns out, this move came just in time, as Castro’s intelligence corps considered him a wanted man. After a short stint in Spain, José settled in Miami, where he would use a now famed hammer to perform carpentry by night after a long day working as a gardener. Through this work, Padrón saved $600, enough to take the first step to realize his dream of producing high-quality cigars in the likeness of Cubans.
