Ever wonder why some cigars appear on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars list, over and over again? With the Padrón 1964 Anniversary cigar, you don’t have to wonder, you can pick up a box and find out for yourself!
Blind taste testers have been routinely treated to an intense, complex array of flavors. Most report the signature Padrón chocolate note, and some have cited nuts, toast, wood, and usually stone fruit on the finish. You can’t overstate how important the finish is to this box-pressed cigar. It’s part of the experience to take a draw, exhale, and spend more than a few moments enjoying the 1964’s flavor profile and body as it develops. Eventually, that magic fades ever so slightly and you’re back to the cigar to pull and refresh it.
Like most Padrón sticks, this was named to commemorate a particular event in the company’s history. This time around, it was the 30th anniversary of the company’s 1964 founding in Miami that gave reason to celebrate. The company story isn’t a simple one. A Cuban émigré named José Orlando Padrón left family tobacco farms after the revolution and landed in Miami. There he found work as a carpenter and managed to scrape together enough money to get a single production run going of cigars. These were far from the top-quality sticks that would make his name. Instead, the Padrón brand started humbly, with 25-cent fumas-style cigars. But things progressed over time, thanks to a supply of delicious Nicaraguan tobacco.
A revolution, a factory fire, and a blockade later, the Padrón family can still be found in Esteli, Nicaragua, producing some of the world’s very best smokes.
If you’re like us, you salute the Padrón family’s achievements with a tiny red beacon – the cherried foot of a freshly lit Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo Natural cigar.
This cigar gets high marks for construction and burn which are near perfect. The mark for flavor is a step down because I expected something more complex out of an Anny ’64. It’s delicious, with strong espresso and some leather predominating. But there’s little nuance and not much depth.
absolutely incredible cigar. got a nine on my scale.
This cigar is clearly in a different class than most. It’s a premium stick and the price reflects it but so does the quality and smoking characteristics. The flavor is pleasantly complex with heavier spice in the beginning and more smooth java and peanuts later. All the while a rich, quality tobacco flavor is present underneath. The smoke is very creamy on the tongue. It lights very nicely and offers a perfect draw. If I hadn’t had to correct the burn once I’d be tempted to give it a 10.
I’m a newer cigar smoker so can’t get elaborate with all the nuances of taste but I know a delicious cigar when I have one and this is it. It replaces the Montecristo Platinum as my current favorite. Burns evenly and slowly for a no-hassle, relaxing experience.
