The quality of a natural wrapper will make or break a cigar. Those with poor quality get put in the bargain bin because word gets around that the cigar doesn’t measure up. Cigars boasting a high quality, great tasting natural wrapper get compared to great stogies from the heyday of Havana. The Padron 1964 Anniversary Diplomatico Natural is one of those Cubanesque sticks that you’ll go far out of your way to grasp, to enjoy to the hilt. This well-built cigar is 7 inches of rich flavor in a 50 ring gauge. That’s a lot of flavor delivered with full-bodied potency over the next hour, maybe 75 minutes. Take your time. You’ll want to rush the next draw, but savor the one still on your palate. It offers a long, smooth finish as the perfect ending to each puff. The Padron 1964 cigars have a well-deserved reputation for consistent quality and wonderful taste. The Diplomatico Natural is a great representative of the line. With Churchill size this one is popular, earthy, traditional and very delicious.
I’m on my second box of these in the last year and I haven’t had a bad one yet. Consistently good construction and burn; taste is always full and the body is medium. Look for buttered toast and espresso at the start with more kitchen spice later on. Complex and delicious.
The Padrons must age the tobaccos in these stogies for a good long time because they are mellow, complex and incredibly smooth. The medium flavor consists of a nutty base with sweet and savory highlights intermingling. These sometimes need a burn touch-up but it’s not a big deal. The coffee/leather/cocoa mix is heavenly.
