El Septimo Luxus Long Shot Black
El Septimo Luxus Long Shot cigars aren’t necessarily true to their name. Measuring 5 inches, it’s not that long of a cigar. It actually might have been called the “fat shot,” thanks to that plump 68-ring gauge. We’re not in the business of naming cigars, however. We’re here to sell them. And this one has a lot to offer, so let’s get to it!
Long Shot cigars are part of the ten-blend Luxus series that features long-aged tobacco and plenty of Costa Rican leaf. This is an El Septimo signature type of tobacco to blend in. While so many companies are focused on more mainstream nations, El Septimo is not-so-quietly carving out a place for itself as one of the world’s leading Costa Rican cigar makers. They may just lead the way into a whole new era, for all we know.
They get a ton of mileage out of Costa Rican leaf in this Long Shot cigar in particular, which features ten-year tobacco. That amount of aging is unusual in an industry where people typically are content to get 1-5 years of maturation done and call it a day. Most of the development is done at that point, but there’s no question that more subtle complexity emerges if you’ve got the patience to keep your harvest in the aging vault as long as El Septimo does.
The way the company tells the story, the smoke you get with the Long Shot starts with “punchy flavors and a notable presence,” but ends in “elegant with refined aromas.” They call out notes of naturally aged tobacco and a shot of pepper in the first third. This develops after many draws into high-end, old-school notes of cedar and leather. It’s a real traditional cigar lover’s cigar – not so much modern as it is timeless.
The Long Shot took quite a while to arrive, but it undoubtedly hit its mark by the time its flight was done.
