El Septimo Gilgamesh Sable Shamash cigars are part of a three-blend collection celebrating the legends of the ancient world. They use aged Costa Rican tobacco to bring a flavor that is quite a bit different than most smokes on the market today. So in that way, they really stay true to their obscure roots deep in the ancient mists of time.
Shamash was a Sumerian (a civilization flourishing in the same location as modern-day Iraq) god of the sun, and was said to have been the source of Hammurabi’s famous code. This King of Babylon from long ago famously recorded his laws, which included the requirement of “an eye for an eye.” Since we haven’t put out anyone’s eyes recently, we are free to focus our time on more pleasant activities, like smoking cigars.
Sable Shamash cigars are built around Costa Rican tobacco, as are so many in the El Septimo portfolio. The mix includes some leaf that has been aging for six or more years. Unfortunately, the stuff they put in storage in ancient Babylon thousands of years ago is no longer smokable. (But we wouldn’t be surprised if someone didn’t take the antediluvian leaf crumbles and try to snort or sprinkle them on something. You guys are unstoppable.)
The flavors are quite nice, actually. It’s a very nutty blend, with toasted almonds leading the way. There’s also nougat sweetness, a black pepper kick, and hints of dark berries. The company is tight-lipped about the exact components of the blend, but they have clearly put some thought into how everything comes together.
The sun god blessed these leaves.
