Warped founder Kyle Gellis and his collaborators have already created several fantastic, highly-rated blends. The company’s reputation for excellence is firmly established with cigars like Guardian of the Farm and Gran Reserva 1988. But that doesn’t mean they will sit back and coast. Instead, they continue to take an interest in blending up stogies that will turn heads and earn a place in our humidors.
This brings us to the Warped Upper Realm.
According to Gellis, the smoke is meant to be a “powerful, primal taste” and is built to showcase a number of Nicaraguan growing regions. The tobacco is grown by Aganorsa Leaf, and the company was bold enough to give us all the specifics, so we can know exactly what went into this cigar.
The filler is roughly evenly split between criollo 98 from Esteli and Corojo 99 from Jalapa. There’s also a dash of Corojo 99 from Condega, as well. Around this feast, you’ll find a Corojo 2012 binder from Esteli and a criollo 99 wrapper from Jalapa. It’s a wealth of classic seeds and traditional, robust flavors. It represents an effort to pull no punches and to make something for the severe smoke hounds. As Gellis reports: “We’re really reaching for a new and higher realm here.”
The Warped Upper Realm is quite an experience at the end of the day. It’s “spice driven, with a sweet core and earth undertones.” It brings the best of what Nicaraguan soil can offer and is a fine showcase of how rich Aganorsa Leaf tobacco can be. It’s nice once in a while to get a cigar that isn’t so much seeking balance and subtlety but offers some raw strength for people who need a cigar that bites back.
It’s an elevated smoke, for next-level smokers.
