Okay, the hype is out of the way, but we had to share it. This cigar features an incredibly tasty blend and there’s really nothing else you need to know. The rest of the text in this description will essentially just be details. You should already have popped this bad boy into your cart so you can smoke one of the nicest Nicaraguan puros on the market.
We also have some bad news for a few of the old smoke hounds out there. 1988 isn’t a year of harvesting tobacco or anything like that. It’s the friggin’ birth year of the founder of Warped cigars. At the time of this writing, Warped owner Kyle Gellis is in his early 30s. He started his cigar company in 2007 when he was in college. When we were in college, many of us were more focused on how many beers we could shotgun before yakking. We weren’t building futures – we were building walls of cans.
To each their own. Moving on…
This cigar is a lesson in simplicity. The Warped Serie Gran Reserva 1988 cigar doesn’t sound complicated, because it isn’t. There’s a Nicaraguan Jalapa Corojo ’99 wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder, and a long-filler blend of Nicaraguan Criollo inside. With a cigar like this, the trick isn’t finding exotic leaves from all around the world. Instead, it’s about testing leaf from farms across a single country until you can find the best of the best, and then blending and rolling them with as much skill as possible.
If you do it right, the tobacco does all the work. You just need to give it a chance to shine.
The smoke is medium bodied. It’s tastefully restrained, with flavors of malted chocolate, coffee bean, earthiness, with a hint of cinnamon. This is one of those cigars where each puff is so good that you become torn between getting your next pull, and trying to make the cigar last as long as possible. It’s a really good problem to have, and one we hope to wrestle with many times.
