Sencillo means “simple,” in Spanish, but this follow-up second blend from Sencillo is fairly complex. The Sencillo Black cigar actually features tobacco from three different growing regions. Not so simple, eh?
For those new to the brand, Sencillo is a cigar line created by Keith Park, the man behind brands like Prometheus, God of Fire, and Angelenos. Now, with Sencillo, he’s after something a bit less bold and daring. Instead, these cigars are quality blends that use great tobacco. He’s clearly branching out from the Sencillo Platinum, which was a more straightforward Honduran puro.
Sencillo Black cigars are made with Ligero long-fillers from Nicaragua and Honduras, both Habano seeds. There’s also a bit of Mexican San Andrés leaf in there as well. The binder and the handsome colorado (a reference to color) wrapper are also Nicaraguan Habano-seed tobacco, making this a mostly Nicaraguan blend. We’ve heard through the grapevine that it was Plasencia fields that gave us these leaves, so we’re expecting a well-behaved blend.
The flavors come out quite interesting in the Sencillo Black cigar. You get your welcoming note of pepper and allspice, and then you move into chocolate mole sauce topped with burnt sugar. If you haven’t experienced mole, it’s typically made with peppers but can include fruit, nuts, and a variety of spices as ingredients.
The Sencillo Black will take you on a trip around Latin America, and you’ll want to taste each of the notes as you go along. It’s a fine offering from a somewhat new brand, and we’re happy to bust it out when the time is right. If you want big flavor, give this one a try.
