Room 101 Big Payback Sumatra cigars are a first for the company. Matt Booth has made a good number of blends in his company’s short history, but nothing yet with a Sumatra wrapper until this blend.
The Big Payback line was designed to change things up a bit. Room101 produces a lot of premium stuff that fans have enjoyed. Many of these cigars have helped the company become the success story that it is today. But to make luxury more accessible, the Big Payback line was conceived. These cigars were meant to be a “thank you” to the fans in the form of a good cigar that is at a more reasonable price point. Of course, not everyone considers the same price to be within reach, but compared to sticks that are $10 and $20, Big Payback cigars are relatively affordable.
Room 101 Big Payback Sumatra cigars feature a special kind of tobacco. Sumatra may be hard to find on a map, but that’s where this leaf was first farmed. In the fertile volcanic soil of Indonesia, farmers were able to produce a leaf that is exotic and aromatic. Of course, going halfway around the world to source tobacco can be a bit annoying, so many growers took to raising Sumatra a bit closer to home. Now, Ecuador Sumatra wrappers, like the one on the Room 101 Big Payback Sumatra, can be found on a variety of blends in the Western Hemisphere.
Underneath that luscious wrapper, you’ll get a rich Honduran binder and classic Nicaraguan fillers. As Ernesto Perez-Carrillo has said, Sumatra wrapper “it blends well with everything,” so it’s hard to go wrong here. In fact, this blend is very similar to La Gloria Cubana’s Gilded Age blend, so if you liked that, this cigar could well be worth a try. The new 4 x 50 El Gran Papi Chulo size should be a fun choice, too.
The flavor profile of the Room 101 Big Payback Sumatra cigar is like a chocolate-covered pretzel at times, with notes of red pepper and caramel to accompany it. It’s a tasty dessert in cigar form, with enough complexity to keep you guessing. It tends to be a somewhat volatile smoke, at times displaying lots of personality, at other times fading. We think it’s a fun one to puff on, and the price is a welcome change from some of the brands superstar smokes that are harder to come by.
