It can be confusing trying to understand how the old version of Punch’s flagship blend fits into the portfolio but just think of it this way. If the cigar is just called a “Punch,” it’s probably a Punch Original cigar. For decades, that’s generally how it was known to the market. Now that lines have more specific names and more details are being shared about each blend, each one has its own name and place in the list of Punch cigars, but this is the core stogie that people have been smoking for ages.
Over the years, Punch Original cigars have regularly earned 90+ ratings from Cigar Aficionado. For example, the After Dinner Churchill size was named the #12 cigar of 2018, earning a 93-point rating. The experts called it “dense, chewy… earthy, and sweet.” You can usually get a lovely spice note in the smoke, followed by a complex array of flavors.
Because Punch Original cigars often incorporate so many different tobaccos, each one tends to be a special experience that’s hard to capture. We can’t argue with this many years of success, though. Those who smoke Punch Original cigars will come back to it time and time again. It’s a blend that everyone should try at least once on their journey through the world of cigars.
There are Maduross that are companion blends to these cigars as well. The tobacco mix is totally different, so they’re really best thought of as new blends. They feature broadleaf wrappers and binders, with Nicaraguan long-filler inside (there’s also an Oscuro version with Dominican filler tobacco).
It’s a classic cigar that’s been enjoyed for generations. What more can we say about that?
