What a way to launch a brand! This 93-rated beauty is full-bodied and packed with rich aged Nicaraguan tobacco including Criollo '98 and leaf from Estelí, Condega, Jalapa, and Ometepe. The flavors are outstanding, offering dark chocolate, plum, and cinnamon, with an oak and molasses finish. It’s a puro from one of the companies that knows Nicaraguan puros best: Plasencia.
For five generations, the Plasencia family has grown tobacco. In fact, they’re the largest tobacco grower in the world. Their leaves are used in dozens of leading brands, including 5 Vegas, Gurkha, Padilla, and Rocky Patel. But even though around 70% of premium cigar makers have used Plasencia tobaccos, the famous growers never saw fit to create their own in house blends until 2017. The Plasencia Alma Fuerte (which means “strong soul” in English) is one of these new blends.
Company owner Nestor Plasencia, Jr. explains that “Our family has been growing tobacco for over 100 years. And we have excellent tobacco in our inventories that we have been selecting and putting aside for a long time." As described above, Alma Fuerte includes secos, visos, and ligeros from a variety of different fields, and is a collaboration between blending teams from Honduras and Nicaragua. As Plasencia says, they “started putting aside tobaccos nine years ago without really knowing exactly what it would be for.”
Now we have our answer, and the brand is off to an amazing start.
