The Plasencia Alma del Campo is a follow up smoke to the 93-rated #9 Cigar of the Year Alma Fuerte (or “strong soul” in English). Where the Alma Fuerte sought strength and power, the Alma del Campo seeks to establish a more balanced smoke without sacrificing rich, satisfying flavor.
The Alma del Campo is a Nicaraguan puro, featuring Nicaraguan wrapper, binder, and filler. It might sound straightforward until you learn that Plascencia is planet Earth’s largest tobacco grower. They have so many plantations across the various growing regions of Nicaragua that they can pick and choose different leaves to create intriguing blends from within their own tobacco library.
And what a library it is! Over thirty different cigar brands, including 5 Vegas, Gurkha, Padilla, and Rocky Patel, use Plasencia tobacco. Plasencia co-owner Nestor Plasencia, Jr. estimates that as much as 70% of the premium cigar market is using the company’s tobaccos, which is quite astounding. With such a hoard of excellent leaf, it was odd that it took Plasencia so long to get around to launching their own blends, but here were are, offering up the Alma del Campo with all its flavors of creamy coffee, nuts, and spice.
It’s a tasty cigar from a family that’s been growing tobacco for over 150 years and somehow is just getting started.
