Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Sungrown Cigars

The Reserve line has long been a staple of the Perdomo brand, helping show why the company grew to have a stable reputation for reliable quality. Over the years, this original blend (once called “La Tradicion Reserve”) served as one of the foundations of the Perdomo portfolio, and so it was a natural choice for a 10th Anniversary celebration like this.

Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Sungrown cigars are part of a three-blend line that also includes a chocolatey Maduro and the famous Champagne wrapper (an Ecuadorian Connecticut leaf), with its best-selling balance of smoothness and flavor. Like its sibling blends, the Reserve 10th Anniversary Sun Grown features six year-aged Cuban-seed Nicaraguan tobaccos. These are grown on Perdomo farms in Jalapa, Condega, and Estelí, providing a nice base of complexity for the flavor profile of the cigar.

The wrapper leaf in particular on the Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Sungrown cigar gets a little extra special love, too, thanks to a phase of aging in a bourbon barrel. Over the course of about 10 months, the sun-grown wrapper takes on a bit of the flavor of the bourbon, infusing with a subtle extra layer of oaky smokiness. This doesn’t lead to a cigar with smoke that tastes like liquor but instead helps provide another dimension to an already fine blend.

Like the other Reserve cigars, this one performed well with the judges at Cigar Aficionado. An 89-point rating marks the Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Sun Grown as a decent cigar. The flavor profile was described in this way: “A strong peanut core reveals notes of dark chocolate, pepper, and tannins with a touch of baking spice on the finish.” It’s similar to the Reserve Maduro, but with perhaps a bit more of a kick. One of the hallmarks of the Reserve line is balance, so the spice is not out of proportion to the other flavor notes. Rather, it keeps its place among the enjoyable taste of the smoke overall, providing a welcome facet of a well-made blend.

The Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Sungrown cigar is medium-full strength smoke, and really shows some of the best qualities of Perdomo products: quality and balance. It’s not a world-beater nor is it meant to be. Instead, it’s a great all-purpose cigar made with fine Nicaraguan tobacco and a master’s ability to blend.

Perdomo recommends having a nice red wine with the Reserve Sun Grown. We see no problem with that. You don’t have to get fancy at all if you don’t want to. You can get Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon for less than $20 a bottle and it’s pretty universally enjoyed – a great match for this cigar.
What’s the best time/place to smoke this cigar?

The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive so far. Perdomo does this three-version blending really well, and has pretty much nailed down how to make a sun grown blend shine over a number of different lines.
