Finally, a cigar as intense as Nick Perdomo himself!
For those not familiar with the man, Nick Perdomo Jr. fought tooth and nail to build a cigar brand from scratch starting just before the cigar boom of the '90s. Times were tough, but he was tougher and 20 years later, Nick was at the top of his industry. So, what better way to celebrate than a special release?
Nick's grandfather got locked up by Castro for 15 years for making cigars under the previous regime. His dad fought as a guerrilla against Fidel and was shot twice. Nick Sr. is also known to swagger through the family's Nicaraguan factory with a pistol on each hip. Needless to say, Nick Jr. comes from a long line of tough sons-of-guns.
So when he started his cigar company back in '92, Nick wasn't going to just follow what was popular. He was going to make cigars that he wanted to smoke and everyone else could fall in line or go to hell. As it turned out, people liked his intense, box-pressed blends and didn't mind the fact that he hated Connecticut shade wrappers one bit.
The Perdomo 20th Anniversary maduro cigar is one of the strongest sticks that Nick Perdomo has ever rolled and a fitting testament to his decades in the biz. It's uncompromising, powerful, and not for the faint of heart.
All the cigars in this Nicaraguan puro are aged for at least 8 years, from the top-priming Estelí, Jalapa, and Condega long-fillers to the absurdly dark Nicaraguan broadleaf maduro wrapper. After its first 8 years maturing in a bale in Tabacalera Perdomo the wrapper was stuffed into an old bourbon barrel to age for another 14 months. The charred barrel added a smoky, flinty oakiness to the already intense wrapper.
The rest of the palate is a robust mix of dark chocolate, charcoal, and black coffee that's been left on the burner. Only a lingering brandy sweetness cuts the dark bitter intensity. It's not for everyone, but full-bodied fans will be pleased.
