Nick Perdomo took the world by storm back in the '90s with his full-throttle blends and box-pressed cigars, and he's been one of the leading figures in the industry ever since.
What better way to celebrate 20 years of Perdomo cigars than releasing a powerhouse maduro blend?
That's exactly what Nick Perdomo did back in 2012, but the blend was so popular that Nick decided to make it accessible to those smokers who fancy the milder, subtler flavors that come from lighter wrappers. After all, Nick's learned a thing or two over his decades as one of the industry's leading blenders and he is now just as good at rolling a Connecticut as he is at slinging maduros.
Enter the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Connecticut Shade and sun grown blends, which give 20th Anniversary options for mild-bodied and medium-bodied fans respectively. And just because these blends are milder than the original maduro doesn't mean that they're messing around: these are ultra-premium cigars that are as full-flavored as it gets.
What makes these cigars worthy of Tabacalera Perdomo's 20th anniversary?
Well, for starters every single tobacco in each cigar has been aged for a minimum of eight years. That's right, these tobaccos are third-graders! And what tobaccos they are too... the long-fillers are ultra-potent top-priming leaves from Estelí, Jalapa, and Condega. Top-priming means that the leaves come from the top of the plant, getting the most sunlight and so develop the most flavor. And the wrapper leaves are an Ecuadorian Connecticut shade or a Cuban-seed Nicaraguan sun grown, both of which get another 14 months of aging in ex-bourbon barrels after their first 8 years aging in bales.
In short, each version of the 20th Anniversary is complex and potent, with sun-ripened oomph and a strong, sweet oakiness from the barrel-aged wrapper. But the different wrapper choices make for surprisingly refreshing takes on this winning theme.
The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Connecticut Shade version is a true medium-bodied cigar with refreshing notes of floral pepper, sourdough bread, fresh corn, and butterscotch in addition to the earthy oak from the barrel treatment. They're Connecticut flavors but very different from the standard cream-and-citrus.
On the other hand, the sun grown actually brings a lot of citrus to the party along with rich cedar and spicy pepper. That might sound more like a traditional Connecticut with a side of pepper, but these flavors are darker and way-the-heck stronger than Connecticuts. And it becomes a woody, roasted-nut treat in the second two-thirds.
Whichever flavor you choose, the Perdomo 20th Anniversary is one heck of a stick.
