We almost never see a new Padrón hit the market, but the Black is here to bless our humidors with something slightly different from one of the best cigar makers on Earth.
In fairness, we need nothing new from Padrón. If they keep doing what they do and focusing on excellence, they’ve already given us more than we could ever properly thank them for. The company has won Cigar Aficionado’s Cigar of the Year a record four times, and for good reason. Lighting up a Padrón is a special experience. As soon as that first draw hits, you know you’re smoking something different, and most folks get hooked for life from cigar one.
It’s the perfect Nicaraguan cigar.
Only a few other cigar makers even belong in the same humidor with these fantastic smokes.
So the Padrón Black owes us nothing. And yet, here it is!
It’s an exclusive blend made for the Cigar Rights of America Freedom Sampler. The CRA is an organization that advocates for the rights of cigar smokers, and anyone who buys the sampler gets a one-year membership in it. The sampler includes some fine smokes from world-class cigar companies like My Father, Oliva, Rocky Patel, and others.
And then there’s the Padrón Black cigar.
This one has its roots in the José O. Padrón 89 Birthday Blend cigar, which also wore a black band.. Neither of these blends comes with descriptions of the tobacco inside, but because it’s Padrón, we can guess that Nicaraguan leaf is the core of the cigar.
This is a humbler Padrón, though. The flavors of cedar, pepper, and cream are there, but it’s not a religious experience. It provides contrast to the chart-topping 1926 and 1964, as well as the Family Reserve. Those are the champion smokes from this company. But if you want to enjoy everything they offer, do yourself a favor and put this one on your list.
