One of the major steps along the way – leaf selection – is in part a matter of instinct. And just because a blender has found an exemplary or interesting leaf, that doesn’t mean they have a huge supply of it. Many companies will set aside some of this really great tobacco they come across to use in their own blends. Sometimes, if they’re not careful, people will clamor for these private reserve cigars and the company will wind up having to do a special release just to please the crowd.
