You know, it takes a lot of work to make award-winning cigars that the world loves. An outstanding cigar takes a huge amount of thought and experimentation. Blenders have to choose a country and plantation for the soil, a method of cultivation (sun grown, shade, something in between?) which primings to grab, how to prepare and process the leaf… on and on it goes, and that’s just to get a cigar into your hand! Making it excellent is pure artistry.
One of the major steps along the way – leaf selection – is in part a matter of instinct. And just because a blender has found an exemplary or interesting leaf, that doesn’t mean they have a huge supply of it. Many companies will set aside some of this really great tobacco they come across to use in their own blends. Sometimes, if they’re not careful, people will clamor for these private reserve cigars and the company will wind up having to do a special release just to please the crowd. The story behind Drew Estate’s Liga Privada goes something like that.
For the Olivas, Master Blends III is a cigar that was born out of the company’s private blending activities. “Liga Maestra,” as it is also known, features an oily, chocolate brown Connecticut Sun Grown Broadleaf wrapper, and a mix of Habano-seed Nicaraguan tobacco for the binder and fillers. The earth, coffee cake, and spice flavors are rich and super satisfying, and the box press on the cigar ensures that the smoke lasts long and the profile stays fairly stable throughout. Now, you can join the Olivas in smoking their limited edition premium private stash.
There’s a lush tropical Nicaraguan field on the band, and if you light it up, this cigar will take you there in just a few puffs.
