In 1902, Gerlando La Rocca sailed to Ellis Island from Raffadali, Sicily in pursuit of personal freedom, economic opportunity, and a brighter future for his family. Once in America, his name was changed to LaRocca and he went on to open a tobacco/candy shop and barber shop, as well as own an apartment building in Brooklyn, New York.
