This one’s a dark beauty – a really nice looking cigar for those who care about color.
The La Palina No. 2 features a Costa Rican wrapper leaf, a Honduran binder, and a Honduran and Nicaraguan filler blend. Light it up and you’ll be treated to spice, earth, and sweet cocoa. If only “Mr. Sam” could see us now, what would he think of the departure from classic blends? We imagine he’d be quite happy to see his legacy living on and his company thriving by moving in new directions.
The smoking experience is quite enjoyable. The tobacco is densely packed, but not so tight that you have to suck on the cigar like you’re trying to get a taste of a fresh McDonald’s milkshake through a red coffee stirrer. The flavors start off mellow – you won’t get a punch in the mouth like with some light-ups – it’s coffee, pepper, and a touch of cinnamon on the tongue. As you go along, wood kind of takes over, but there’s a chill creaminess that is welcome and relaxing. The final third gives way to dark roast coffee and a bit of nutty flavor as you make you way to the end.
For a company that started operations in 1896 in Chicago, a flavorful, modern smoke like this just shows how far the team has come.
