When you produce a nice, strong blend that people enjoy, where do you go from there? Do you try to create a mild or medium, seeking some balance? Do you attempt to bring in different flavors? Do you age the blend to see where it goes?
If you’re Joya de Nicaragua, you double down on that mofo and crank the throttle as much as you can – welcome to the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Dark Corojo!
This is a rich, even stronger follow up to the Antaño 1970, a cigar created to recall the Joya glory days of the early seventies, back when it was one of the best-selling smokes in America. Joya President Juan Martinez calls it a “doble fuerte power cigar.” “Doble” means “double,” which in this cigar is a reference to the blenders’ use of twice the usual amount of ligero tobacco. Ligero is the high priming leaf found at the top of the tobacco stalk. This leaf drinks in maximum sunshine and delivers the most nicotine content, which gives it its characteristic strength.
The Antaño Dark Corojo ain’t messin’ around.
Outside, you’ll see a dark and quite oily Nicaraguan Corojo Oscuro wrapper. Inside, there’s a blend of Nicaraguan tobacco that includes 3-year-aged fillers that pack a nice punch when you light them up. This is a full-bodied smoke that brings in a wealth of warm flavors like earth, cedar, bread, and traditional Nicaraguan spicy red pepper.
The 90 rating lets you know it’s a quality smoke that definitely deserves a light if you’re into Nicaraguan puro cigars that pull no punches.
