Indonesian cigars may be the definition of exotic for some cigar smokers, but for others, they’re a go-to. While everyone is falling all over themselves to get the next hot thing out of Nicaragua, there’s prime volcanic soil rich with nutrients that can grow outstandingly flavorful tobacco halfway around the world.
Indonesia is an island nation (more than one island, actually) found south of the Philippines and Southeast Asian nations like Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia. Perhaps you’ve heard of a little tobacco leaf known as Sumatra? Well, that’s where Sumatra is. We know that Ecuador-grown Sumatra tobacco is incredibly popular, but the genuine original is grown on the Pacific Rim.
True Sumatra leaf tobacco on Indonesian cigars has a flavor that is somewhat hard to place. It can be mellow and a touch sweet, and easily overwhelmed by other tobaccos. It’s a leaf that works best as part of a fuller blend. This means that you need a skillful blender to create truly great Indonesian cigars. The tobacco won’t do all the heavy lifting as with certain varietals and regions that produce tobacco that is rich, flavorful, and ready to go right out of the ground (so to speak).
One decent example of an Indonesian cigar that uses a true Sumatra wrapper (not Ecuador Sumatra) is the Romeo y Julieta 1875 Reserve Bully Sumatra. It’s got a spicy, zesty punch and a complex vegetal flavor profile you won’t find anywhere else. Truly, among other cigars on the market, this is one of the few smokes that is really out there. We’ve got a ton of premium cigars in our inventory, but true Indonesian cigars are hard to come by.
Ecuador Sumatra is everywhere, but these Indonesian cigars are something entirely different. If you want something fresh in your humidor that will wake up your palate, give these a shot, and please leave a review. The Indonesian cigar market is depending on it!
