Illusione cigar lines are named for concepts both mystical and mysterious. Government conspiracies, ancient conundrums, and of course, the truth behind UFOs. In this case, the name is straightforward, but we can’t help but notice that if a time traveler from JFK’s era showed up, he or she would probably be after a cigar like the Illusione Candela. After all, if would remind our time traveler of home.
You see, back in the day, tons of cigars featured candela wrappers. The 1960s were the peak of candela-wrapped smoking, and everywhere you looked, you’d see leafy green smokes sticking out of dads’ mouths as they mowed their perfect green suburban lawns. Eventually, this wrapper would be replaced in the industry by the smooth coffee and cream flavors of Connecticut Shade tobacco, but for a brief time, everyone had the green light to fire up and puff away on candelas.
The flavors are quite a bit different from what you might be used to in modern blends. The profile is fresh, with an unmistakable aroma of tea, the field, and even a sweet grassy note. While modern blends tend more toward the dark earth and mature, rich soil, candela tobacco is all about fresh growing life and the bright spirit it brings. It actually provides a nice counterpoint to some of the powerful cigars that are no doubt lining your humidor.
For times when you need something a bit lighter, the Illusione Candela is there.
The long-filler is a blend of Nicaraguan Criollo '98 and Corojo '99, which is then wrapped in a “AAA Grade” Candela finishing leaf. The smoke is mild to medium bodied, offering floral notes with hints of leather and natural sweetness. This is definitely a throwback smoke, and a perfect trap for a time traveler. It’s also a nice way to do a little time traveling yourself - back to the 60s or simply forward an hour on a lazy boat made from woven leaf.
