When you’re south of the border or in the Caribbean, there are some things that just taste better there. One of these is dark rum, which transforms from just another bottle on your shelf into a magical potion that melts your gringo cares away. Even if you aren’t a rum sipper, you might find yourself enjoying rum on the rocks with a splash of cola and wondering why you should even bother coming back to the states.
Gurkha has taken that feeling and put it into a smoke with the Gurkha Private Select cigar.
Like the Grand Reserve (Cognac infused) and Bourbon Collection Gurkhas, this one is infused with the good stuff: Ron Abuelo 7-Year rum from Panama. No dipping, no injecting. The infusion process is a secret method that Gurkha doesn’t disclose, just like the Drew Estate ACID team responsible for so many super-popular infusions.
However they do it, it works.
You first get the delightful aroma of rum as soon as you pop the wax seal on the glass tube the Private Select comes in. The packaging is for protection not of this cigar, but of the rest of your humidor. Unless you want your entire collection to smell like a hungover pirate, keep your Private Selects in tubes until it’s smoking time.
The cigar comes in Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrappers as well as a dark Broadleaf Maduro, with a binder and interior blend made of Dominican tobacco. Once you light up, you’ll get the flavor of Ron Abuelo rum right up front. That cane molasses aged in oak barrels just can’t be denied. There are tobacco notes under that, though: leather, earth, cocoa, and a tasty toffee. It’s a medium bodied smoke with strength just under medium.
When you’re in need of tobacco and a drink but you can’t pour one just yet, reach for the Private Select. It’s got what you need.
