Forget everything you know about Cellar Reserve: the Gurkha Cellar Reserve Platinum is a different kind of beast altogether!
If you’ve been smoking up the Cellar Reserve line, you’re used to a signature Dominican blend that brings a wealth of rich tobacco flavor to the cigar. Whether it was the first blend with the 15-year-aged long-filler leaf (the Cellar Reserve 15 Year), the follow up with the dark Brazilian Maduro wrapper (the Cellar Reserve Limitada), or the third blend in the series featuring an 18-year-aged Corojo wrapper (the Cellar Reserve Edicion Especial), the sticks were built around a similar interior tobacco.
The Gurkha Cellar Reserve Platinum has officially left the Dominican Republic, making landfall in Nicaragua to breathe new life into this outstanding family of cigars.
The wrapper is an Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper – not as dark as the name might suggest, but instead a nice deep brown color. Inside things get a little more interesting with a Nicaraguan filler blend that includes tobacco from Condega, Estelí, and Jalapa, along with some leaf that’s been maturing for 12 years or more.
The smoke is about medium-full in terms of strength, and not as complex as previous editions in the Cellar Reserve line. Simplicity, of course, isn’t a bad thing – a nice focused blend that showcases high quality smoke is just about all we need in this world. The Gurkha Cellar Reserve Platinum cigar has a core note that you might find to be silly or a cop-out, but it’s best described as a rich, natural tobacco flavor. It’s joined by two classic tastes of Nicaraguan leaf: red pepper and chocolate.
Amigo, this is a nice smoke, and an interesting interlude in the Cellar Reserve series.
