The original Cellar Reserve cigar was a special product in the history of Gurkha cigars. The company didn’t start like other cigar businesses, selling tobacco in cigar shops. Instead, Gurkha owner Kaizad Hansotia had family connections in the duty free shop industry. His father was a distributor to those shops, and adding cigars to his offerings seemed like a fairly promising venture. It was a success, and it helped Gurkha gain a foothold and build a reputation as a producer of premium cigars.
It wasn’t until the 90-rated Cellar Reserve, however, that Gurkha made it into the humidors of American smokers across the nation (rating from Cigar Aficionado).
The Gurkha Cellar Reserve cigar was the first Gurkha stick to appear on the shelves of what we in the fancy Internet Age call “brick and mortar” retailers. You might know them more familiarly as your local smoke shops and cigar shops. So this was the blend that really helped Gurkha gain momentum in the early days, when the company had a reputation for being a way for super rich people to burn more of the world’s hard-earned money. It still has some of those cigars with crazy price tags, but it also produces relatively more affordable sticks like these to round out the brand portfolio.
The Gurkha Cellar Reserve Limitada cigar is a follow up to the Cellar Reserve 15 Year, which featured 15-year Dominican long-fillers, along with a Dominican Olor binder. Instead of the original Criollo wrapper, this cigar turns to the dark side, swapping it out in favor of a rich and flavorful Brazilian Arapiraca Maduro wrapper. Light it up and enjoy the tastes of black pepper, earth, espresso, dark cocoa, and a touch of orange zest.
As with almost all cigars from this company, the Gurkha Cellar Reserve Limitada cigar comes dressed to impress. The cigars themselves are well-rolled figurados with pigtail caps. If you opt for a box of 20, you’ll be treated to a vintage wine crate-style container that, like all Gurkha packages, is made for display, not storage. It’s a fine smoke and one that always makes you look good.
