Dunbarton’s “mistress” is back again, and she’s darker than ever. What once was a flavorful blend has become a brand unto itself, spawning the Triqui Traca line and now the Mi Querida Black to add to the family.
The original stogie was a Nicaraguan smoke wrapped in Connecticut broadleaf. It earned 90+ scores with a number of leading reviewers and sparked a red-hot ember in the fanbase. Because that ember is still glowing, there’s ample opportunity for Steve Saka, founder of Dunbarton, to head back to the blending table and see what other fruit can be harvested from the fertile Mi Querida tree.
The Black version follows a similar format to the original but makes some moves that turn the stogie into a full-on flavor bomb. The binder has been traded out for a luscious Mexican San Andrés negro leaf. Then, down in the long-filler blend, you’re getting tobacco not just from Nicaragua, but the Dominican Republic and Honduras as well.
As you can imagine, we’re headed to a real feast this time around.
Dunbarton Mi Querida Black cigars were first released in 7 1/4 x 54 double corona called the “SakaKhan” (a nickname Saka got in the Navy). Notes of oak, leather, espresso bean, black pepper, and more are all to be found as you draw along. This is sure to be the place for flavor hounds to park their snouts and enjoy the wealth of aromas from this true tobacco treasure.
