Diamond Crown Original cigars are the blend that kicked off a jewel-studded partnership many years ago between the Newmans and the Fuentes.
The Newmans have been making cigars in America for over a century. They claim to be “America’s oldest family-owned premium cigar maker.” We don’t doubt it, given that young J.C. Newman, founder of his self-named cigar company, started rolling tobacco in his family’s barn in Cleveland in 1895.
That kid had a lot of hustle in him; we know that for sure.
Nowadays, his descendants run the company. Bobby, Eric, and fourth-generation tobacco man Drew Newman (serving as general counsel) know the value of a good partnership. And to that end, they maintain ties with Arturo Fuente’s descendants. Today, that world-famous company is headed by Carlos “Carlito” Fuente, Jr.
Together, the two families have been making Diamond Crown cigars for quite some time. This Diamond Crown Original cigar was designed to celebrate the company’s centennial. Even though the Newmans have a variety of high-quality brands under their umbrella (like the red-hot Brick House, popular Quorum, and legendary Cuesta Rey), they went abroad to create this premium offering.
It was meant to be a crowning glory, so it had to be good, right? There are a handful of blenders and growers in the industry that you might respectfully request to take on the project, and the Fuentes are among the ones you would wish upon a star for. Fortunately, the relationship has deep roots so that we can enjoy the fruits of that tree to this day.
Though other Diamond Crown cigars (Julius Caeser and Maximus) have been created, this is the one that birthed them all. The original cigar features delicious Dominican tobacco from Fuente fields aged for no less than five years. That long-filler leaf bundle is then adorned with a handsome genuine Connecticut wrapper. This wrapper was double fermented for an extra smooth flavor.
Even a decade beyond its release, the Diamond Crown original cigar is still garnering accolades. That’s how you KNOW it’s not a hype job. In 2022, Cigar Aficionado stamped it with a 90-point rating, saying, "Though large and thick, the draw of this cigar is sublime, showing a light, pleasant smoke of fresh tobacco with a nutty and floral character. For fans of mild cigars.”
It’s a fabulous cigar. Perfect for honoring the legacy of one of America’s great cigar companies. And as a “stealth Fuente,” we can’t wait to smoke it.
