In the past, Crowned Heads put out a really well-liked blend they called Las Calaveras Edición Limitada. But, with all limited editions, the supply eventually runs out. Because Las Calaveras had so many fans, however, Crowned Heads had to find a way to morph the blend into something that could be produced a bit more regularly. Thus, the Crowned Heads La Imperiosa cigar is the successor to the original 92-point smoke.
La Imperiosa is a heritage brand, originally made in Cuba in the early 1900s. In English, it means “the imperative” – that is, something that simply must be done. In this case, perhaps it was the need to create a regular blend so that the cigar world wouldn’t lose a blend that a lot of people were really digging? Well, in a situation like that, you’ve got to find the right blender and grower to make sure that you do justice not just to your own smoke, but to the cigar’s Cuban roots.
The Crowned Heads guys sure know how to pick collaborators! This one gets rolled up courtesy of “Don Pepin” Garcia of My Father Cigars, and comes with all the quality you’d expect from one of the best in the business.
The Crowned Heads La Imperiosa cigar features an Ecuador Habano Oscuro wrapper on the outside, and then Don Pepin’s perfectly selected Nicaraguan long-fillers inside. The blend comes out quite muscular, with notes of red pepper, nuts, and dark fruit (specifically, peanuts and cherries). It’s a bit of a banquet, and somewhat of a different direction for those familiar with the chart-topping My Father blends that are more known for artistry and sophistication. Crowned Heads always brings quality, but generally delivers a smoke with more ass-kicking character than gentle refinement.
Las Calaveras has vanished into the humidors of collectors around the country, but La Imperiosa is at full strength and here to stay. Toast it up and enjoy another tasty blend from the boys in Nashville.
