The CLE Prieto cigar is the twin blend of the Chele. They mean dark and light, respectively. Or, more properly, these names are slang for dark-skinned and light-skinned people.

So we can all get offended!

CLE Prieto cigars are a new effort from the company. After all those years obsessing over Honduran tobacco, the team has branched out and these are the first blends focused on Nicaraguan long-filler tobacco. Unlike the Chele, which was wrapped in a dirty blonde Ecuador Connecticut, the Prieto comes with a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, fermented into Maduro-Ville.

These came out absolutely bomb! The flavor profile is quite intoxicating, with earthy coffee, sweet nuts, and exotic herbs and spices swirling around in the mix. That broadleaf that they chose here is something else. CLE Prieto cigars have clocked in at a 92-point rating with Cigar Aficionado, so the official stamp of “smoke this delicious cigar” has been applied to this new line.

You’ll notice a healthy box press on CLE Prieto cigars. Some people swear by this prep method for producing a steadier burn and better draw. It also changes your mouth shape a bit, which can lead to better aeration of smoke as you pull. You may think that’s all hogwash, but folks have been box pressing cigars forever, so there’s a bit of method behind the madness.
