We know what most people think of when they imagine cheap lighters: the ol’ gas station Bic. For decades, it’s been a standard. We can all remember a generation or two above us that used cheap lighters for everything that needed to be set on fire. But these convenience store lighters always had a problem that annoyed the hell out of everyone who used them:
The wind.
The wind is the great enemy of people trying to get a light outside. No matter how much you push that fuel selector toward the plus sign to get a huge flame, all it takes is a gentle breeze to send you into fits as you cup the flame, trying to protect your cheap lighter flame without burning yourself. Inevitably, you lose your flame AND manage to burn yourself.
Our cheap lighters are different.
Cigars are just too big to catch a proper light off of a traditional gentle gas flame, and so we have jet flame lighters that ensure that you can get toasted up, no matter what the wind is doing. It’s a different kind of technology entirely that makes cheap cigar lighters different. The thing is, the flame needs oxygen from the air to stay lit. Ordinary gas station lighters get this air from around the flame once it’s already out of the lighter. Cheap lighters from Cigars Direct, on the other hand, use a venturi tube to pull in air and mix it with the fuel prior to ignition. This results in a stronger, hotter flame, along with that light roaring sound you hear once you fire up the lighter.
Many of our cheap lighters feature a triple-jet flame, which means three nozzles of flame are active in a single press of the ignition. This gives you a nice wide blade of flame to get your whole cigar toasted at once, instead of setting yourself up for a “canoe” situation where some of the cigar is unlit and the burn starts off uneven. This is no Bueno if you’re trying to enjoy the blend as the cigar maker intended.
Hopefully, that helps set the record straight. Cheap cigar lighters are a different breed of lighter. They’re not throwaway accessories. Instead, they’re the least expensive, most affordable version of the tool that you absolutely need to get the job done reliably outdoors. Sometimes they even come with a punch so that you can get your cigar opened and ready to smoke in a punch.
You gotta love that.
